Bookies Celebrate as Spain Win World Cup 2010

Last updated: 12/07/2010 13:50
Big pay offs for bookies with punters gambling to epic proportions making World Cup 2010 the biggest gambling event in history.

William Hill, Britain’s leading bookmaker has called this World Cup the single biggest gambling event in history.

Betting turnover for football’s premier event was epic and set a record turnover of £1 billion. William Hill spokesperson Graham Sharpe offered some insight….

“Not even England's unexpected early demise prevented the World Cup producing a record betting turnover and fortunately for us Spain's early defeat by Switzerland seemed to dampen enthusiasm for backing them, which worked in our favour”.

There are some examples of punter success such as the story of one William Hill client who backed Spain to the tune of £50,000 on odds of 9/2. The payout was 4 ½ to one and the happy punter walked away with a cool £275,000.

Looking ahead to World Cup 2014, bookies have already started dampening the hopes of the 3 Lions supporters. The English squad has been written off at odds of 16/1 - a very slim chance of success. Seems harsh but Graham Sharpe had this to say about the dismal odds offered for England…..

“We have never quoted England at such long odds for a World Cup before, but after the debacle of their campaign this time we need to offer such odds to have any hope of attracting any one to back them”
